“Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His holy name. Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” Psalm 33:20 to 22
Unlike battles and war today, a shield was a must-have in combat during the times the Psalms were composed. Armor had not yet been perfected. The shield would have been a necessity for survival. In the New Testament, Ephesians 6:16 states, “Above all, picking up the shield of faith with which will quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” Not only does the shield represent protection from close combat, but can also buffer against items thrown and launched from a distance.
When we realize the Lord, through faith, is our shield, we take on our day-to-day without worry. We can our steps in faith - one foot in front of the other - knowing that the Lord will protect us from everything that is hurled our way. We may be engaged in battle, but that doesn’t mean we fight alone; we are protected by the Lord. Pray today that your eyes are opened to the height, width and grandeur of His shield.
