Psalm 33:12
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage!
David may have been speaking of his nation - the Israelites/Judah - at the time this psalm was composed, but with the new covenant through Christ, all people (the "gentiles") are welcome to receive His heritage!
Paul tells us in Ephesians 3:4-6 “You can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ … that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”
This goes for race and gender too: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:2).
All have been "grafted in" to the covenant of Abraham, God's chosen heritage:
"And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God's special olive tree" (Romans 11:17).
That heritage was given to us freely through Christ (the Gardener who grafted us onto God's tree), but we have to choose it: we have to acknowledge and worship God as our Lord.
Imagine you are a child of a very wealthy father, who dies and leaves a great inheritance in your name...but you do nothing to claim it. And it sits there, doing no one any good. Imagine further that as that heir, you need medical bills paid for, your kids need food, and your neighbors lost their house...and all that time you had the ability to care for these situations and yet you did not claim your inheritance! It would be tragic if you did not know it was there...but how much more tragic it would be if you DID know it was there, and yet you STILL did not claim it!
The Bible is telling us in so many ways that we have a great inheritance lying in wait! God is yearning for us to claim it; He is eager to bless us! 2 Chronicles 16:9 says, "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His." He wants to pour out his blessings and support those who have Him indwelling...unfortunately, that verse goes on to say: " [but] You have acted foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you will have wars.” I don't know about you, but I feel as if my entire life has seen endless war around the world, and there seems to be no end in sight. How painful it is to know that we have chosen war instead of God's blessing and support that is ready and waiting.
May we be as obedient as the Psalmist: "Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession" (Psalm 2:8)
And indeed, God HAS asked us to do just that. Jesus directed his disciples to "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone" (Mark 16:15).
Pray for our nations, who are all God's inheritors, that we may choose blessing instead of war, that we proclaim God as our Lord, that He may fully bestow upon us His support.
