Day 30: Adonai

Adonai

Adonai means Lord, Master, and Owner.

The first time this word appears is in Genesis 15:2

After these things the word of Adonai came to Abram in a vision saying,
“Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”

But Abram said, “My Lord Adonai (GOD), what will You give me, since I am living without children, and the heir of my household is Eliezer of Damascus?” - Genesis 15:1-2

Abram acknowledges that Adonai is his Master and submits to him and is completely dependent upon Adonai. Here we see that Adonai is a title of respect and honor.

Adonai also speaks of relationship.

When Abram told God of his concern, that he has no children and God responded to him by saying, “Don’t worry, Abram, I will keep My promise.

In the New Testament, Adonai Refers to Jesus.

In Greek, it means sovereign power, ownership, absolute authority.

…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord… - Philippians 2:10

It always says “Lord” first and Savior, because Jesus is always Lord but also our Savior.

So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” - Acts 16:31

…you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We have been bought with a price. He now owns us, and we belong to Him to do His will.
